Integrated Team Delivers a Superior Facility
Early involvement; seamless collaboration; and continued partnerships between the hospital, developer, architect, and engineers were key to the success of this superior healthcare facility. Opening in February 2012, this new two-story facility includes a 35,000-square-foot orthopedic surgery facility and the 35,000-SF Baystate Children’s Hospital Pediatric Outpatient Specialty Center, which features pediatric specialty exam and treatment space and a retail pharmacy. The facility is located a short distance from the main Baystate Medical Center campus in Springfield, Massachusetts. Baystate Health is one of the largest privately-owned health care systems in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
The design and construction team successfully used an innovative approach similar to Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). To reduce costs and better manage a highly technical and complex construction project, Baystate teamed with a developer to secure a site adjacent to its other outpatient facilities, provide general contracting service, and serve as landlord. The design team utilized Building Information Modeling to guide the process from consensus building in schematic design to mechanical coordination during construction.
Constructed in 13 months, the facility includes eight operating rooms (two of which will be shelled for future use), 28 pre-op and recovery bays, sterilization and processing facilities, changing rooms, and administrative offices.
