Solutions for an Expanding Facility

Midstate Medical Center

Design teams for healthcare expansion projects are often charged with assisting hospital administrators and staff provide higher quality healthcare to more and more people, while simultaneously helping to lower the cost of delivering that care. Midstate Medical Center’s Emergency Department expansion was no exception.

The Perkins + Will and BVH Design Team approached the project with an overall goal of efficiency and flexibility in mind. The 50-bed emergency department is part of a new four-story, 100,000-SF Patient Care Pavilion, the largest addition in the history of the Hospital.

The project accommodates the building’s expansion with a new 7,500-SF central plant and a new boiler, chiller, switchgear, and generator. To minimize disruption to patients and staff, the project required complex phasing and a temporary emergency department entrance and ambulance bay.

The new Patient Care Pavilion also includes:

  • Assessment Unit, a Behavioral Health Unit
  • Two 30-bed private room Inpatient Units
  • A fully dedicated floor to Patient Care Services
