Two Campuses in One Building
New Haven, Connecticut
It is not often that all of the many educational facilities, administrative functions, and student amenities of an entire campus come together in one structure. This new massive facility, thoughtfully scaled both inside and out, spans two former brownfield downtown blocks. It consolidated two existing Gateway Community College campuses into one new learning center. Offering more than 100 accredited degree and certificate programs, it includes 90 general purpose classrooms, 22 computer labs, 10 meeting spaces, a two-story Library & Learning Commons, cafeteria, bookstore, business center, culinary arts center, health center, early learning center, administrative offices, and a variety of other features.
The new facility, which serves 7,000 full-time students, is a four-story brick and glass structure with a spacious multi-level atrium and 600-space parking garage. Energy-efficiency is a cornerstone of the planned campus, utilizing renewable and alternative energy technologies including solar, hot water, and photovoltaics. Designed as a state-of-the-art “green” facility, the campus maximized the use of energy-efficient systems and equipment, and reduced demand. Through intensive efforts by the whole design team, Gateway achieved LEED Gold certification.
