Integrating Design & Learning
Learning is greatly enhanced when the educational program is integrated with building design. The new state-of-the-art science, math, and technology building on the campus of this respected, private coeducational school is a showcase for this type of synergy. The center provides state-of-the-art classroom and laboratory space, and also demonstrates strategies for sustainable design, which can be incorporated into the curriculum. Natural lighting and environmentally friendly materials all contribute to productive learning environments and an overall energy-efficient design. The many strategies and materials included in the building earned a LEED for Schools Gold certification.
Advanced technology enables the school to offer an expanded technical courses, such as robotics and forensic science, marine biology through a laboratory with saltwater aquariums built into the walls, chemistry, physics, earth science, and math. Video conferencing capabilities support remote collaboration and distance learning. The center also features common spaces for student gatherings and faculty suites with a mixture of science and math teachers to promote further collaboration. The building is topped by a greenhouse for students to observe and learn about plant species and sustainable environments, an adjacent roof terrace for outdoor scientific work, such as weather stations and telescopes, and a green roof.
