BVH’s work takes "Best Sustainable Design Project" at Real Estate Exchange Awards Night
BVH Integrated Services was awarded the "Best Sustainable Design Project" from the Real Estate Exchange for its innovative engineering work on the Rogers International School, a new 106,000-SF, interdistrict environmental magnet school in the Stamford Public School system that serves 660 preK-8th grade students. The award was presented at the Annual Connecticut Real Estate Awards & Developers Showcase on March 24.

The architectural/engineering team of Tai Soo Kim Partners Architects and BVH Integrated Services designed the school to foster an intentional educational focus on the environment. Creative environmental architectural and engineering components were built in for educators to incorporate into their curriculum, teaching students valuable lessons about energy saving and harnessing the natural environment for energy. A candidate for LEED Silver Certification, the project was chosen as the subject for a study for the Connecticut Green Building Council.

Among the many sustainable design features is a green roof, which covers 50% of the building and is designed for active use by students to learn about organic and sustainable gardening. Captured rainwater is the only source of water to irrigate the rain garden. A wind turbine located at the highest elevation demonstrates the concept of “free energy” or wind harvesting, and displays within the school provide real-time data about how much energy the wind turbine is producing. The energy generated is used for powering lobby lights and exterior lighting at night.

Other green building features include water conserving plumbing fixtures, ice storage for the HVAC system, and efficient fluorescent lighting with auto daylight dimming. The facility’s carefully planned acoustics and abundant daylight make it easier and more comfortable for students to learn. The school is also equipped with a demand control ventilation system relying on CO2 sensors in high density spaces, such as classrooms, auditorium, cafeteria, gymnasium. The building’s many innovative design elements provide a wealth of hands-on learning opportunities.

"What is exceptional about this project is its continued commitment to sustainability and fostering of a collaborative and educational spirit," said Ilona Prosol, P.E., LEED AP, BVH’s Project Manager. "I am proud of the entire team for their hard work and commitment to environmentally-sensitive design excellence."

Multiple Awards for BVH Projects & Commissioning Department

ACEC/CT Excellence in Structural Engineering Award

BVH Integrated Services, Inc. received an award for engineering excellence for its structural engineering work on the new Bridgeport Superior Courthouse for Juvenile Matters and Detention Center. The American Council of Engineering Companies of Connecticut (ACEC/CT) presented the award to BVH structural engineers John Beauregard and Rachelle Clark for excellence in several categories: meeting or exceeding the client’s needs, social, economic or sustainable design considerations, originality, and complexity. The ACEC/CT competition attracts entries from individuals and firms in Connecticut engaged in the practice of consulting engineering.

The $54 million, state-of-the-art building, which was officially opened by the State of Connecticut in October, 2008, is a significant project for the state's population of troubled juvenile offenders. The modern complex replaces an abandoned 100-year old trolley barn on the site and consists of two new buildings connected by a sallyport: a 38,000 square foot, two-story courthouse and a 54,000 square foot, three-story detention center.

The architectural/engineering team of BVH Integrated Services, Inc., JCJ Architecture and Ricci Greene Associates encountered several structural challenges in the design of the building, including poor bedrock and soil conditions, high floodplain and water table, and a 100-year old asbestos-laden trolley barn.

The construction of the new Bridgeport Superior Court for Juvenile Matters and Detention Center consolidates all of the social services for juveniles under one roof, eliminating the need to shuttle youngsters from one place to another for court appearances, interviews, services or treatment.

The State of Connecticut was very satisfied with the final project design. DPW Commissioner Raeanne V. Curtis issued a statement in a press release that said, "I am proud of the DPW staff and the design and construction team we hired to build this excellent project. This complex includes state-of-the-art security and at that same time, it has an attractive campus-like presence. Indeed, it is an asset to this region, one that will serve the community well into the future."

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Connecticut (ACEC/CT) is the leading organization for the business and professional interests of consulting engineering firms in Connecticut. ACEC/CT offers a variety of programs and services for those who contract with engineering firms to perform professional services, or for those who simply have a question about the different types of engineering services that are available today. ACEC/CT is a member organization of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), representing over 55,000 engineering firms throughout the country.

Yale Sculpture Building Receives AIA Committee on the Environment Award
The Yale Sculpture Building and Gallery is the recipient of an AIA/COTE Top Ten Green Project award. The AIA (American Institute of Architects) Committee on the Environment has more than 7,200 members and 49 regional chapters. Each year since 1997, the AIA COTE selects ten projects from a large number of entries, and evaluates them according to ten measures, including: intent and innovation, community, site, bioclimatic design, light & air, water, energy, materials, long life, and feedback. Project economics (i.e. cost savings from the green features implemented in the project) are also considered. AIA Top 10 winners receive media coverage in widely distributed publications, including Sierra Magazine, Metropolis, Architecture and Architectural Record.

Among the jury’s comments on the Yale project were words like "elegant," "high performing," "beautiful," and "balancing warm and cold season operation." The Yale Sculpture Building and Gallery complex includes three new buildings: the four-story Sculpture Building, the one-story storefront gallery, and a four-story parking garage. Sustainable design features are incorporated throughout the project, starting with its location on a brownfield site, which was formerly an abandoned parking lot. Rainwater harvesting, waterless urinals and low-flow faucets, daylighting, high-performance insulation, and natural ventilation also contribute to the project’s sustainability. The Yale Sculpture Building and Gallery is the first building in Connecticut to receive LEED Platinum certification.
