Brookhaven National Laboratory
Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) Building
Upton, NY
The Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) at Brookhaven National Laboratory provides state-of-the-art capabilities for the fabrication and study of nanoscale materials, with an emphasis on atomic-level tailoring to achieve desired properties and functions. This new two-story building of approximately 94,500 SF houses a wide variety of labs designed specifically to aide the scientist in meeting the CFN’s scientific focus and objectives. There is a clean room for Nanopatterning, high accuracy rooms for Electron Microscopy and wet and dry laboratories to serve other cluster groups. There is also a cold room and bio-labs for biological nanotechnology. The office space for CFN staff and users has interaction areas to allow scientists to share ideas outside the lab areas, and conference rooms for more formal meetings. Achieving LEED Silver certification, the design takes into account the use of sustainable design based on LEED 2.1 and LEED for Labs. Special consideration was taken to ensure protection of the equipment housed in the facility from vibration and Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI) from current sources located on the BNL site such as the Doppler radar station. |
