St. Francis Hospital & Medical Center
John T. O’Connell Tower
The John T. O’Connell Tower is bringing Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center into the next era of world-class care. The new 318,000 square foot, 10-story facility doubles the size of the hospital’s emergency department; replaces older, smaller operating rooms with state-of-the-art facilities; and replaces patient rooms with single, private rooms.
Unmatched in its sophistication in this region, the new healthcare facility accommodates the latest innovations in green construction, medical technology advancements and cutting-edge telecommunications. The O’Connell Tower includes an enlarged Emergency Department, expanding the treatment area from 49 to 68 treatment bays and increased space for ambulances from six to 10 parking spots. In addition, there are 19 replacement operating rooms including two “Hybrid” ORs, 72 replacement medical/surgical patient beds, and a new rooftop helipad. The Tower also includes six orthopedic operating rooms and 63 replacement inpatient orthopedic beds for the Connecticut Joint Replacement Institute (CJRI), dedicated to joint replacement surgery.
BVH provided structural and civil engineering services for this $184 million project. The scope included design of the foundation systems, building superstructure, exterior wall facade supports, specialty OR equipment supports, site design and site utilities. The first four floors of the Tower opened in late 2010, with the rest of the building completed in early 2011. |
