Bridgeport Superior Court & Center for Juvenile Matters
Dual Function Facility

Bridgeport, CT

BVH provided structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering design for this new 85,000-SF facility. The new facility replaced an abandoned 100-year-old, asbestos-laden trolley barn and consists of two new buildings connected by a sally port: a 38,000-SF, two-story courthouse and a 54,000-SF, three-story detention center. The courthouse features two courtrooms, a hearing room, and office space for court personnel, attorneys, probation officers, and state services. The residential juvenile center includes a library, gymnasium, dining room, classrooms, detention areas, kitchen, and laundry rooms. Within the detention center is a housing area with 44 double-occupancy sleeping rooms for juvenile offenders, and four dayrooms with a two-story common room with each.

The fast-track project successfully surmounted several scheduling and site challenges, satisfying the State of Connecticut with its innovative design and construction. The project was featured in the January 2009 issue of Structural Engineer and also received an Engineering Excellence Award for structural engineering from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Connecticut.
