Loomis Chaffee School
Clark Science Center
Windsor, CT
BVH provided mechanical and electrical engineering services for renovations and expansion of the Clark Science Center, situated in the center of the campus of Loomis Chaffee School, a privately-run day school in Windsor, Connecticut. The original building was constructed in 1960, with an addition added in 1969, bringing the total square footage to 36,000 SF. The $13-million full building renovation includes redesigned classrooms, new laboratories, new offices for teachers, and a redesigned lecture hall. Outdated building systems were completely replaced with new systems, and a new lobby entrance and side entrance constructed on the north and east faces of the building. A new stairway and elevator were also fit into the building layout, eliminating the former ramps.
Modern mechanical and electrical systems in the renovated classrooms, designed by BVH, focus on energy-efficiency, including motion sensors, daylighting controls, and solar tubes. Along with three heat recovery units, VAV controlled air handlers and carbon dioxide controls are located throughout the building. The main lobby and lower level of the lecture hall have radiant heat slabs. These building system features reduce energy consumption and add to the air quality in the building. In addition to eleven regular classrooms, the new center also contains four bio/chem classrooms, four physics lab classrooms, three project rooms, one deep storage room, one classroom/computer lab, a robotics lab/classroom, a planetarium, nine offices, a faculty/seminar room, a botanical walkway across the roof, an earth rotation pendulum, an elevator, and renovated restrooms. The building was completed for the fall semester of 2008. |
