Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine
Due in large part to the construction of Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine, the Connecticut bioscience community is afire with the possibilities in genomics, where scientists will attempt to link patients’ DNA to specific medical conditions, and unlock new cures.
With a grand opening in October 2014, the 183,500-SF building was constructed on a 17-acre site on UConn Health Center’s lower campus. Within 10 years, it is estimated that the project will house 300 biomedical researchers, technicians and support staff in state-of-the-art computing facilities and laboratories. Their mission will be discovering the precise genomic causes of disease, developing individualized diagnostics, treatments and cures, and helping build Connecticut’s bioscience industry.
The Connecticut facility is an expansion for Jackson, which is based in Bar Harbor, Maine. Spaces within the LEED Gold project include microbiology-based research laboratories; bioinformatics research clusters; adaptable scientific service cores; conference and training facilities; and supporting administrative facilities and infrastructure. This project also includes the design of a 3,000-SF data center with a fully redundant one megawatt UPS system and cold aisle containment.
The building was erected on a very limited site that provided significant design challenges. The space abuts a sloping hillside and a designated wetland on the opposite side, so the design team positioned the structure and utilities in a way that left the wetland undisturbed.
Storm drainage and design measures include a stormwater collection system that filters parking lot run-off through bio-retention swales and stormwater planters before draining it into the public sewers. Another stormwater management feature includes a 40,000-gallon cistern that collects rainwater off the roof for irrigating the natural landscaping surrounding the building.
