Maximum Security for Long Term Incarceration

The MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution

Suffield, Connecticut

The MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution, built in 2001, is a level four/five state facility for adult males. The facility, which sits on 140 acres, provides a highly structured environment to manage chronic discipline, long-term sentenced offenders, pre-trial protective custody, high bond offenders, close monitoring and protective custody offenders with programs designed to address the needs of each population.

In January 2003, a design-build 600-bed expansion of this state facility was completed. The expansion comprises five two-story buildings with 60 beds on each floor, and a new corridor system connects the new buildings to the existing facility. Each floor has a control room and day room with telephones and dining tables. The new space also includes shower rooms, laundry rooms, program rooms, offices, and storage.
